Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s indigenous grape. Today, at least 2000 years after first plantings, Gru-Vee is still Austria’s most widely planted grape.(pronounced GREW-ner FELT-leen-ner or simply “GruVee”)
It had been the local favorite that few outside of Austria knew anything about until the early 1990’s when a report of a tasting that pitted Grüner Veltliners against big name Chardonnays from around the world was published by the widely read Jancis Robinson. The stunning result of that tasting was that six of the seven GV’s placed in the top eight rankings of the 36 wines tasted and truly outshone some of the biggest Chardonnay names in the world. The results shattered the mystical aura of Chardonnay and started the scramble by the rest of the world to find out more about this unknown wine. The groundswell continues today and Gru-Vee is perhaps the hottest cult variety in North America.
The reason for the adoration of this wine is that, like Chardonnay, it is a full-bodied, fruit-driven wine with a big creamy texture and at a much more reasonable price. Additionally, Gru-Vee is never heavily oaked and, as a member of the Traminer cépage, has an enticing spiciness that makes it perhaps the most versatile food wine in the world. It even pairs well with the likes of artichokes and Asparagus – foods that generally destroy lesser wines. Sommeliers have adopted this “new” wine as the first recommendation to customers who are looking for the alternative to Chardonnay. Chefs embrace it because it enhances such a broad range of their dishes. Consumers are thrilled with the discovery.
Cellar Craft's Weingut Huber Selection will serve as an excellent introduction to this ancient wine.
The wine has a green – yellow hue. Complex aromatics are reminiscent of apple, pear, grapefruit, honeydew, honeysuckle, banana, and peach. The flavors echo the melon, apple, citrus and peach aromas.
The medium-bodied wine shows just a hint of sweetness to balance the natural acidity. The finish lingers pleasantly. Works well with foods. Spicy Asian dishes would be a good pairing to discover the wine’s ability to enhance diverse dishes.
Best enjoyed after a couple months of bottle aging and within a year. Don’t over-chill.
